Rangoli designs are made in all the statesofthe India and are known by the different names in differentstates,like “Rangvalli” in Maharashtra, “Mandana” in Rajasthan,“Rangoli”in Karnataka, “Alpana” in West Bengal, “Kolam” in TamilNadu,“Airpana” in Bihar, ”Ossa” in Orissa, “Chowkpurna” inMadhyaPradesh, “Sathiya” in Gujrat, “Sona Rakhana” in UttarPradesh,“Muggu” in Andhra Pradesh, “Kalam” in Kerala and each statehasit’s antique and unique way of creating these patterns anddesigns.The most important component of Rangoli is Utswdhermita.Forthis, important symbols are chosen and these symbols are madeasthey are made by the last generations. Conventionally, everynewgeneration learns the art from their ancestors and thus afamilykeeps the tradition integral and alive. Many symbols are madewithRangoli and some symbols which are used often in Rangoli arethelotus flower (also its leaves), fish, mango, tue vase, andtheshapes of the birds and animals: I.e. parrot, swan, peacock,tigeror of some other animals, and also of humans.Sometimes Rangoli are made on special event like Diwaliandmarriage and then other patterns are followed. Somedistinctsymbols used for Diwali Rangoli are the flowers, Ganesh,Lakshmi;the Diya also named as ‘Deep’ or birds of India. Thematerial usedis also differ in different states as these designsare made ofrice, colored sand, flower petals, turmeric, vermilion,chemicalcolors(a modern variation), red brick powder and evenflowers incase of flower rangoli.
